On Monday, March 10, 2025, the Social Economic Council (SER) hosted an informative session for third year students (VWO) of the Milton Peters College (MPC). The purpose of the informative session was to enhance their understanding on the role the SER plays in advising the Government of Sint Maarten and Parliament of Sint Maarten on socio-economic matters. The session was hosted by Ms. Ursela Salomon, in her capacity as a policy worker and Ms. Shamika de Weever, who serves as the Office manager. With this informative session the SER aims to educate young minds on the importance of social dialogue, consensus-building, and the impact of advisory bodies in governance.
During the morning sessions students received an overview of the SER’s composition, mandate, and advisory process. Through interactive discussions, students gained insights into how the Board can influence policies related to economic development, labor relations, and social welfare. “This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment by promoting civic engagement among the youth of Sint Maarten. By understanding how policies are shaped, students are being prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow. The SER’s goal is to help the young people understand how part of the legislative process of their country functions,” said Gerard Richardson, Secretary-General of the SER.
The informative session is open to students from all secondary schools, the University of St. Martin, and those interested in public policy and governance. The SER congratulate Ms. Salomon and Ms. de Weever for continuing this initiative which was started a few years ago by Legal Policy Advisor, Ms. Cheryll Bute and former Policy Advisor, Ms. Carla Vlaun @followers.
